Afton Street Conservation Park

Address: Afton Street, Aberfeldie

Melway ref: 28D7

Afton Street Conservation Park is a historical open space on the Maribyrnong River. The site and surrounding Maribyrnong Valley Parklands are home to several species of birds, and features occasional visits by swamp wallabies, dolphins and seals.

A reminder: please don’t feed the ducks or other birdlife. It’s very unhealthy for them.

For an explanation on the reasons why, watch our one minute YouTube animation and share it with your friends to help spread the word!

Afton Street Conservation Park Wetland

The Afton Street Conservation Park Wetland helps to protect and improve the water quality of the Maribyrnong River.

Wetlands are a natural way to filter stormwater. These wetlands harvest stormwater from the Hoffman Main Drain and will provide a sustainable water supply to maintain five local sports ovals, saving more than 22 mega litres of water a year.

The wetlands have increased the biodiversity of the area by providing a new environment for native plants and animals.  Local residents and visitors can also enjoy the stunning natural surroundings.  Download the Afton St Conservation Park Wetland self-guided tour to learn more as you explore.

The construction of the environmental wetland is an important component of the Afton Street Conservation Park Master Plan (pdf. 7.9MB).

Car park upgrade – concept design

A concept design has been prepared for the upgrade of the Afton Street Conservation Park car park. View the design.

The car park upgrade will:

  • increase the capacity of the car park (from approximately 40 to 75 spaces)
  • seal and line mark the car park
  • widen the entry to become an entry and exit point
  • retain the exit point at the top of the car park
  • provide new pedestrian path connections
  • provide additional native planting in the car park and upgrade planting along the Afton Street edge
  • divert stormwater to the wetland to remove pollutants before it enters the Maribyrnong River

Note that the timing of the car park upgrade works is subject to our annual budgeting process.

Call for members - Friends of Afton Street

We are calling for volunteers to join the Friends of Afton Street to help preserve and enhance Afton Street Conservation Park and Moonee Valley’s first wetland.

With support from us, the group meet regularly and undertake activities at the site including planting, weeding, water monitoring, community education, bird surveys and mulching.

Please refer to the Community environment groups and events page for planting dates and information on Moonee Valley's Friends Groups.
