Background information

In 2010, we approved the Moonee Ponds Activity Centre Structure Plan (MPACSP). This plan was developed in line with Melbourne 2030, the State Government’s policy for managing development and population growth.

Melbourne 2030 requires major activity centres, such as Moonee Ponds, to develop into densely populated, vibrant hubs that have god access to services, shops and public transport.

Upgrading the Moonee Ponds Junction is a priority project in MPACSP and will help this centre transform it into a vibrant, safe and pedestrian-friendly area with improved public transport services, better pedestrian facilities, and less traffic congestion.

The Moonee Ponds Junction upgrade proposal recommends the following changes:

  • New and larger central bus terminal
  • Tram line extension along Mount Alexander Road, connecting with existing tram line near Essendon Railway Station
  • Improved pedestrian facilities
  • Better pedestrian links to Puckle Street and Queens Park
  • More efficient traffic flow and parking solutions
