Heritage building

The Incinerator Arts Complex is a dynamic and innovative multi-art venue located at 180 Holmes Road, Moonee Ponds. The magnificent Essendon Incinerator (later the Incinerator Theatre) was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and built in 1929.

In recent years it has undergone substantial restoration and renovation. It reopened in 2004 as the Incinerator Arts Complex, and is a significant cultural facility of the City of Moonee Valley.

Incinerator history
The City of Essendon commissioned world-renowned Architect Walter Burley Griffin and engineering company RIECO to build a new waste destructor in 1929.

The Essendon Incinerator was the prototype of this innovative collaboration between architect and engineer (John Boadle).

Thirteen such incinerators were built across Australia from 1930 to 1938 and only six remain. Of these, the Essendon Incinerator is the best maintained and the only one in Victoria and was:

 Opened 31 July 1930
 Operated until 1942
World leader in air purity and economy of operation
Used as depot store until 1981
Converted to theatre 1985 (West Theatre)
Heritage Significance: Unique and Innovative Building - site specific design:
In December 2003 was voted one of Victoria's best buildings by the Victorian Chapter of the Royal Institute of Architects
Listed on Register of National Estate
 National Trust of Australia (registered)
 Australian Heritage Commission (registered)
 Heritage Victoria (registered)
