Green Precinct Project  Printer Friendly

Moonee Valley City Council will become an Environmental Leader with its new “Green Precinct” project set to create a blueprint for sustainable projects incorporating local businesses in Victoria.

The area between Pascoe Vale Road, Mt Alexander Road and The Strand will be developed as a high profile area demonstrating best practice sustainable business activities and employee programs that concentrate on energy, water, waste, biodiversity and travel.

The Green Precinct has received $190,000 from the Victorian Government Sustainability Fund which targets partnership-based, practical projects that will help Victorians to take action for sustainability.

The businesses within the Green Precinct include:
 Essendon Historical Society
 Kellaway Avenue Neighbourhood Centre
 Kinder Haven Childcare
 Max’s Cafe
 Melbourne Metropolitan Magistrates' Court
 Moonee Ponds Bowling Club
 Moonee Valley Civic Centre
 Moonee Valley Police Station
 Queens Park
 Queens Park Swimming Pool (YMCA)
 Sam Merrifield Library
 St Thomas Anglican Church
 The Clocktower Cultural Centre

Project Goals
The project will aim for:

 A 20% reduction of 2007/08 greenhouse figures by 2010 and a carbon neutral precinct by 2020;
 A reduction in 2007 potable (drinkable) water figures by 30% for each business by 2010;
 The recovery of 75% of solid waste to be reused or recycled by 2010; and
 Increases of at least 25% in the accredited GreenPower use for each business by 2010.

Currently, the project is undertaking environmental audits of the buildings to assess energy and water usage and costs. The auditing process will also identify opportunities for utilitiy reductions. More information will be available shortly.
