| Moonee Valley Family and Local History Blog | | The Moonee Valley Family and Local History Blog is a popular site with lots of information about people and places, as well as notice of recent acquisitions and upcoming events.
Keep visiting the blog for more news and articles as they are added; it’s an ongoing project and we welcome participation from library users. You can also email us with comments and queries.
| Sam Merrifield Library Archive Collection | | The Sam Merrifield Library has a collection of material that is fragile and of historic importance to the local area. At the moment we are scanning some images to make the items more accessible to the public. A collection of circulating books from the 1930's-1950's is part of this collection. Circulating libraries were a part of Melbourne life, the earliest being the Melbourne Athenaeum in Collins Street founded in 1839 and still going strong today.
At a more local level Eric Stinton established a subscription library to his newsagency in 1928, known as Stinton's Hygienic Book Club in Puckle Street, Moonee Ponds. For more information on the history of circulating libraries in Melbourne read this article from The Latrobe Journal: Choose your author as you would choose a Friend: circulating libraries in Melbourne, 1930-1960
| Want to learn more about Moonee Valley? | | The Local History collection located at the Sam Merrifield Library contains resources in book, fiche/film, photograph and CD-ROM format. Our Canon Microfiche/film reader/printer/scanner allows you to make excellent copies from the local papers or the microfiche collection; bookings are necessary and you can book for up to two hours.
If you would like some instruction on how to use the reader/printer please contact the Local History staff on 8325 1950 and we will arrange for a demonstration. While most items are not for loan, the Local History collection also includes kits on popular topics such as Queens Park, Puckle Street and the Maribyrnong River.
| Australian Electoral Rolls, 1903-1954 on Ancestry | | Ancestry database now contains selected Australian electoral rolls 1903-1954, with the exception of South Australia. Electoral rolls were compiled by each state during election years to determine the number and names of individuals eligible to vote. Information listed in electoral rolls usually includes: name of voter, gender, address and occupation.
London Records in "Ancestry" Ancestry has just added some fascinating London records to their database, and anyone with family connections to London will enjoy researching them. They are:
London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1834-1906 London, England, Deaths and Burials, 1834-1934 London, England, Poor Law Records, 1840-1938
To access Ancestry , book some computer time at any of our libraries; we do not have remote access from home for this database.

| Australian Historical Newspapers Online | | On 25 July the Australian Historical Newspapers (Beta Service) was launched to the public. This ongoing project to digitise historic newspapers currently contains 70,000 newspaper pages from 1803 onwards and additional pages are being added each week.
The National Library welcomes feedback and participation with the project. A list of the titles and date ranges scanned is available from the Selected Newspapers page, but The Argus is the only Victorian newspaper.
