Request

We are asking for funds from the State Government to implement the Master Plan priorities, and funding to employ an executive officer to manage priority projects for the MRVCC.

Potential costs

$30 million over 10 years

Progress on this project

We have invited the Mayor of Maribyrnong and representatives from Maribyrnong Council to the next Integrated Waterways Committee meeting to discuss the project.

Background information

The Maribyrnong River provides an important public space for you and for people living across the north west region of Melbourne. To ensure the river remains in a healthy and useable state along its length, long term planning and development is required at both the local and regional level.

We adopted the locally focused Maribyrnong River Master Plan in June 2011, which provides a vision for future planning and improvements to the section of river between Afton Street footbridge and Maribyrnong Road. It aims to increase public space along the river, provide areas for outdoor activity, upgrade facilities and pathways, and boost the waterway’s health – all in line with the Liberal Nationals Coalition’s commitment to maintaining urban open space.

In addition, we participates in the Maribyrnong River Valley Coordinating Committee (MRVCC), which was formed in May 2010 by the cities of Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Brimbank, Hume and Moonee Valley. Its primary goal is to improve the condition and enjoyment of the Maribyrnong River by establishing a linear park, and improving walking and cycling trails along the river, as detailed in the Maribyrnong River Valley Design Guidelines.

We are committed to managing and protecting the Maribyrnong River and surrounding open space. The sheer size of this task and coordination involved across many stakeholders means strong support is now needed from both State and National Governments to ensure the river can be protected and enhanced today and into the future.
