Creating a safe Moonee Valley

'Safe Communities' brings communities within the City of Moonee Valley together to create a safe and positive environment for all. It aims to promote health and safety, prevent injury, violence and suicide, and minimise the consequences of natural disasters.

Cities all over the world are using the program which operates from the University of Karolinska in Sweden.

Our Community Safety Program 2011-2014 (pdf, 6MB) recognises that local residents, businesses, students, community services, and governments all play a valuable part in achieving a safe community.

It provides a space for collaboration, monitoring, research, and learning and development in the area of community safety, and coordinates community safety activities.

The three key priority areas are:

  • Innovative and responsive service delivery
  • Quality evidence collection and dissemination
  • Sustainable and productive partnerships

For more information on the Community Safety Program, contact our Community Development unit 9243 8888.

Community Wellbeing fact sheets

These factsheets are designed to increase awareness about health and wellbeing in our city and assist in the planning and development of projects.

Diversity and social inclusion

2012 Diversity and social inclusion factsheet (pdf, 1.75MB)

Moonee Valley is made up of a culturally diverse community. Understanding the specific health inequalities experienced by particular groups can assist us to address and develop programs that increase social inclusion and improve health and wellbeing for all.

Mental health and wellbeing

2012 Mental health and wellbeing factsheet (pdf, 1MB)

Despite population differences across all parts of the city, research indicates mental health is an important issue across all of Moonee Valley. In the North Western areas, which house the largest proportion of older residents, issues such as dementia and depression are likely to be more prevalent. In the Southern areas, where our populations of recent arrivals reside, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are likely to be present in greater frequencies.

Community safety

2011 Community safety factsheet (pdf, 958KB)

All people have the right to feel safe in their homes, their neighbourhood and all aspects of their lives. Community safety is a concern for all residents and we are committed to working with local communities to create an even safer city for all.

Transport and accessibility

2011 Transport and accessibility factsheet (pdf, 961KB)

Transport and accessibility are critical for linking people to places and services and therefore contribute to reducing marginalisation and isolation. It is important to reduce dependency on motor vehicles and increase opportunities for people to use alternative methods of transport to get around, including public transport, walking, cycling and car pooling. This may help to reduce our carbon footprint, reduce the cost on low income groups and to address the effects of social isolation.

Housing

2011 Housing factsheet (pdf, 1MB)

Affordable housing is recognised as an important contributor to health and wellbeing. A lack of affordable housing contributes to income pressures, inability to access services and erodes household stability. An absence of affordable housing in particular areas can decrease social diversity and inhibit a sense of connection to place and community.

Physical health

2011 Physical health factsheet (pdf, 1.8MB)

There are a number of health challenges facing Moonee Valley, particularly due to our ageing population. Understanding the specific needs and disadvantage experienced by particular groups, supports initiatives that are targeted and strategic in addressing health inequalities.

Problem gambling

2011 Problem gambling factsheet (pdf, 989KB)

The gaming industry is considered to be a 'legitimate and valued' part of Moonee Valley, with the horse racing industry being a strong part of our history. In addition, Electronic Gaming Machines are used either regularly or irregularly by an estimated 80 per cent of Moonee Valley residents. A tailored approach is needed when addressing problem gambling because of the diversity of our population and the multiple entry points into problem gambling.
