Community café serves up new opportunities

Moonee Valley City Council’s award-winning traineeship program for people with disability is seeing successful graduates gain permanent employment in the municipality.

The program, which operates at our Crown Street Stables community café, provides hospitality training to local residents with disability who are passionate about working in the industry. Only five per cent of people with disability in Moonee Valley are currently in the workforce, compared to 62 per cent of all residents (2011 Census data).

Since its launch 12 months ago, the program has seen three trainees graduate, with two of those graduates gaining paid employment after completing the program.

Graduate Nhi Tran of Flemington completed the traineeship last September and secured permanent part-time employment in retail after graduating.

“The best part about the traineeship was being able to socialise. There was a time when I had disconnected from everyone and this was a chance for me to reconnect with the community and to take part in something,” Ms Tran said.

“The traineeship helped me in so many areas - physically, emotional, mentally. I changed a lot after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and working in the cafe helped me reunite with my old self.”

Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek said the event reflects Council’s Disability Action Plan 2014-2023 objectives, which aim to ensure we provide support for residents with disability.

“Council’s Disability Action Plan outlines a commitment to ensure people with disability gain work experience and paid employment opportunities. We’re thrilled to see this being fulfilled with our graduates now enjoying working in retail and hospitality roles in the community.”

Crown Street Stables’ café space is designed and operated as a community hub with free events and workshops offered throughout the year for residents. View the full program at our Crown Street Stables page.
