Buckley Ward June/July update

The Aberfeldie Men’s Shed is building miniature libraries that you’ll start to see on the streets of Moonee Valley. The first library, outside the shed on Rutherford Street, is full of books you can borrow! This wonderful initiative makes books accessible to everyone and encourages a lifelong love of reading. Our draft MV2040 Strategy outlines a series of strategic directions that will help us bring more business to Moonee Valley, and improve our shopping areas and entertainment spaces in our city. It also outlines what we’ll do in each neighbourhood, so take a look at mvcc.vic.gov.au/2040.

About Cr Narelle Sharpe

Tell us about yourself

We’re excited to be trialling a new initiative, Acorn, to support local businesses. Acorn is a free co-working space at Sam Merrifield Library that gives you the opportunity to work with other entrepreneurs, expand your network and learn from others.

This is just one example of how Moonee Valley libraries have evolved since they opened 50 years ago. No longer just a place to borrow books, libraries play a vital role in lifelong learning, improving literacy and accessing technology. Join us in celebrating this milestone with a range of free events throughout the year.

What do you hope to achieve in your term as Councillor?

Some areas I intended to focus on include advocating for the full signalisation of the Mt Alexander/Keilor/Bulla Road intersection and the preferred option of rail under road at the Buckley Street level crossing.

The proposed new planning zones will need to be addressed and we must ensure that residents and residential streets are protected from high density development.  Heritage buildings within Buckley Ward must be saved and protected.

I will continue to ensure the best services are provided to residents through all life stages, from birth to older age and I look forward to developing the upgrade of the Niddrie Library.  I’m keen to see the dedicated off leash dog park at Alf Pearce Reserve finalised and developed.

Consultation with residents on all issues that may affect them must be a priority of Council. We need your input to provide the information to make responsible decisions.

What do you think are Moonee Valley’s greatest strengths?

Moonee Valley has many strengths – rivers, racecourses, sporting clubs, beautiful parks and streetscapes, the people, the shopping, entertainment precincts and the arts, its close proximity to the city and Tullamarine Airport – the list could go on. Moonee Valley is a wonderful place to live and I am humbled and honoured to be a Councillor of this great city.
