Airport West Easement Green Spine Project

The Airport West Easement Linear Reserve is being upgraded in 2017 and 2018 to become Green Spine; a community focused open space.

In consultation with the local community, we developed a Airport West Greenspine Design (pdf, 2.58 MB) for the linear park that runs along the Airport West Easement between Parer Road and Fraser Street in Airport West.

Stormwater that runs from the local streets in the area is going to be captured, cleaned and stored in an underground tank. Capturing, cleaning and re-using this water will not only help keep the park green, it will remove contaminants from road and other surface run-off. This offers great benefits to downstream waterways such as Steele Creek and the Maribyrnong River.

The project aims to:

  • Create a community focused design that improves the parkland through features such as BBQs, plantings, playspaces, shelters and seating.
  • Develop a design for harvesting, cleaning and re-use of local stormwater which could include the creation of water features such as seasonal creek beds, ponds and underground water storage.
  • Improve the quality of local waterways.

The project has been partly funded through Melbourne Water's Living Rivers Program.

We’ll be updating this page regularly as the project progresses, please see below for the latest information on the project.

Update November 2017

Works recommenced in October on the development of the Green Spine project after a delay from July to September 2017.

Environmental works were undertaken earlier this year and additional training has been provided to workers on site to appropriately manage the next stage of the project. The project is scheduled to be completed by May 2018.

Project timeline:

November, 2017 – Works recommenced on site

December, 2017 – Earthworks continue; construction of the Green Spine elements commence

January to May, 2018 – Construction of the Green Spine elements

May, 2018 – Anticipated project completion

Update August 2017

Following a delay due to minor levels of asbestos, we have arranged for the Airport West Green Spine Stormwater Harvesting and Landscape Project to restart in mid-October 2017.

The first action will be to undertake weed control throughout all four reserves.

Restarting works during the spring will minimise any further disruptions, including weather, and ensure the project is completed by May 2018.

We will continue to manage the small fragments of cement sheet containing asbestos identified during the initial earthworks. While the level of contamination is not considered significant and does not pose any concern to the health and wellbeing of the community, we are committed to continuing to implement appropriate action for the remainder of the project.

We apologise for the delay.
