Future of our leisure centres

Moonee Valley’s leisure and aquatic facilities were built originally in the 1950s and 1960s.

Over the years they have been improved and upgraded and have become centres that now offer a wide range of services.

Given these centres are ageing, in particular the swimming pools, it is now time to plan to ensure these centres can meet changing community needs well into the future!

Aquatic Leisure Centre Plan

Our Aquatic Leisure Centre Plan (pdf, 1.22MB) aims to guide long term decision making about leisure centre redevelopment in Moonee Valley.

Two of the first priority actions in the plan are to:

  • develop a feasibility study to look at redevelopment options for the East Keilor Leisure Centre
  • develop possible upgrade works in particular for the concourse area at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre

The future of East Keilor Leisure Centre

Future of EKLC guaranteed - 24 August 2016

The green light has been given to one of the largest-ever construction projects in the city’s history.

Councillors voted to rebuild East Keilor Leisure Centre transforming the tired 50 year old complex into a state-of-the-art aquatic and leisure facility, which will also include a new 50 metre outdoor heated pool.

The decision follows extensive community consultation over a two-year period, consideration of a number of concept plans and a detailed feasibility study to ensure the new centre will meet the community’s current and long-term needs and that it represents best value for ratepayers’ funds.

In agreeing to the final design, we have also taken on board the views of many in the community who wanted to see the retention of a 50 metre outdoor swimming pool.

View the approved concept plans (pdf, 1.63MB).

We have closely with the community, centre users and East Keilor Leisure Centre's community reference group to identify key features of the new aquatic centre ensuring people of all age groups and levels of ability are catered for. The new centre will include:

  • 50 metre heated outdoor pool
  • 25 metre indoor lap pool
  • dedicated learn to swim pool
  • dedicated hydrotherapy pool for older residents or people recovering from injuries
  • spa and sauna
  • indoor water play features for young children
  • café and seating area
  • new gym, group fitness and spin studios
  • crèche
  • accessible and family change rooms

Our Aquatic Leisure Centre Plan’s five guiding principles of social inclusion, access for all, building the community’s health and wellbeing, affordable access and financial viability, have been instrumental in shaping the final design.

The new centre will also increase the range of gymnasium and fitness-based space and will provide additional car parking for users.

At this time the project is estimated to cost $37.5 million. Funding for the detailed design and documentation of the new double storey centre will be referred to the 2017/18 budget for consideration. Funding to construct the project will be considered in subsequent years.
