Healthy ageing exercise programs

We offer a range of affordable classes to improve the health and wellbeing of senior residents (aged 65 years and over, people with disability or carers).

These classes are a fun way to exercise, stay active and meet new friends. Sessions are held at neighbourhood and community centres across Moonee Valley.

2017 dates

Semester 1: 6 February - 30 June 
Semester 2: 17 July - 15 December

Cost

  • $6.45 per class for Moonee Valley residents
  • $11.30 per class for non-Moonee Valley residents

Body Balance

Body Balance is a low intensity class inspired by yoga, tai chi and pilates. Exercises build flexibility and strength and leave you feeling centred and calm.

When: Thursday, 6pm-7pm
Where: Ascot Vale Neighbourhood Centre, corner Union Road and Munro Street

Chair exercise

Strength training exercises done sitting in a chair. Suitable for those with limited mobility, this class will help improve strength, mobility and posture.

When: Tuesday, 10am-11am

Pilates

Lengthening and stretching exercises that work all the major muscle groups in a balanced fashion. Pilates improves flexibility, balance, body awareness and strength, particularly of your core muscles. Exercises can be adjusted to accommodate individual abilities.

Strength training

A range of exercises using a variety of equipment such as dumbbells, resistance bands, medicine balls, mats and steps. These classes are designed to help you build fitness, strength, mobility and balance. Exercises can be adjusted to accommodate individual abilities.

Tai Chi

Gentle, fluid movements that are slow in tempo and easy to follow. Designed to enhance relaxation and improve balance and health.

Yoga

Breathing, stretching and strengthening exercises, followed by guided relaxation for improved physical and mental health. Exercises can be adjusted to accommodate individual abilities.

Zumba Gold

Laugh, dance and shake your way to a happy, healthy body. Classes feature an easy-to-follow program with modified, low-impact moves.

Pushy Social Rides 55+

Get on your bike and explore Moonee Valley’s parks, waterways and open spaces with accredited AustCycle instructors.

We have partnered with The Squeaky Wheel to organise a Pushy Social bicycle ride for those aged over 55 years. The rides will be in groups of 20-25 participants departing from two different locations and will take approximately 1.5 hours.

Cost is $5, bookings are required.

Ride 1

When: Wednesday 8 March at 10am

Where: leaving from Men's Shed Flemington, 126 Racecourse Road, Flemington Estate

Start at 10am, quick break at 11, then a lunch will be provided after the ride.

When: Saturday 6 May at 10am

Where: Departing from the Men's Shed Strathmore, 144a Mascoma Street, Strathmore

Participants should bring along their bike, a bike helmet and a bottle of water. There will be rest breaks at 11am and lunch will be provided after the ride.
