Read and recycle at the library

There are loads of household items that can be recycled, but not all of them can go in your regular kerbside recycling bin as they contain hazardous materials or are considered e-waste.

The stations are set up in Sam Merrifield, Avondale Heights and Niddrie Libraries as a trial and you can recycle:

  • household batteries
  • mobile phones and chargers
  • CD/DVDs
  • VHS/cassette tapes
  • small household printer cartridges
  • fluorescent tubes and globes

If the trial is successful, the stations will be placed in additional locations.

Across Victoria, Clean Up Australia Day and Environment Victoria estimate that:

  • 97 per cent of household batteries are landfilled instead of recycled each year
  • 98 per cent of fluorescent lights (1,100 kg of mercury) are crushed in landfill each year
  • only 9 per cent of mobile phones are currently being recycled
