Settler's Cottage - Updated 5 May
We are moving forward with work to preserve the historical ‘settler’s cottage’ formerly located at 1070 Mt Alexander Road, Essendon. The timber cottage, which was relocated to Council's depot in May so it can be restored, is an important part of Moonee Valley's history and has potential regional importance stemming from the gold rush era.
Council took the decision in December to relocate and restore the cottage, which had been approved to be demolished as part of a new development.
A Conservation Management Plan (CMP) is being prepared to guide the refurbishment. This is being undertaken in two stages. Stage one identified significant fabric that needed to be conserved and protected during the transportation of the cottage to the Council’s depot in Holmes Road, Aberfeldie.
A specialised contractor undertook preliminary works in accordance with the CMP to ensure the building was stable and safe to be relocated. This included carefully removing the roofing iron to ensure it cleared power lines during the relocation. The transportation of the cottage also required the removal of some weatherboards which revealed a second skin of weatherboards and an original window which had been hidden away for years.
The stage one report will inform the preparation of the stage two CMP which will proceed now that the cottage has been relocated to the depot. The stage two report will focus on the preparation of detailed conservation works scheduled which will identify the repairs, refurbishment or reconstruction works that are necessary to conserve the heritage value of the cottage, as well as principles to guide the selection of a future permanent home.
Once restoration is complete, options for a permanent location and use for the cottage will be considered at a future Council Meeting.
Over the coming months we will follow the progress made by the trades people restoring our heritage. Have a look at the photos of the works completed to date.
