Celebrating our cultural diversity in Moonee Valley

Wednesday, 7 March 2018

Moonee Valley City Council will proudly celebrate Cultural Diversity Week, held across Victoria from 17 to 25 March, with a program of events for the whole community.

Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek said the week was a chance for the community to come together to experience different cultures.

“We look forward to celebrating the vibrant music, traditions and tastes that our different cultures bring to the table, helping to make Moonee Valley such a richly diverse and welcoming city,” Cr Sipek said.

“In the coming year, Council plans to focus on initiatives that encourage our community to accept and embrace one another’s cultural heritage. Celebrations such as these are an important part of this, along with advocating on behalf of our multicultural communities across all levels of government.”

Portfolio holder for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access Cr Cam Nation said this year’s Cultural Diversity Week program offered two new exciting events.

“Our FReeZA committee for young people is organising ‘Downstairs @ 3031’, an outdoor music event at the Flemington Community Centre,” Cr Nation said.

“It will showcase the talent of diverse artists and young people within our community, featuring local hip hop, rap and electronic musicians.

“Then we have the Cultural Marketplace, an opportunity for new and emerging small businesses and entrepreneurs from migrant backgrounds to showcase their businesses and network with each other.”

Cr Sipek said that because of his Croatian background, the annual Mediterranean Fiesta was always a special event for him.

“The Mediterranean Fiesta at Centreway is always a treat. With live music and dancing, cooking demonstrations and delicious food stalls, it’s a jam-packed day for the whole family.

Other events such as bilingual story times and foreign film screenings will take place at our libraries. For a full program of events, visit the Cultural Diversity Week event page.
