Council signs commitment to Wurundjeri

Monday, 6 August 2018

As part of Council’s celebration of Wurundjeri Week (6-12 August), we have reaffirmed our partnership with the Wurundjeri Council.

Wurundjeri Elders and Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek joined forces today to sign our new Statement of Commitment to respect, recognise and build relationships with the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and encourage others in our community to do the same.

Cr Sipek said the signing was timed to take place on the first day of Wurundjeri Week as we celebrate the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Moonee Valley is located.

“This renewed commitment is an important step in acknowledging our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” Cr Sipek said.

“In celebrating Wurundjeri Week, we also launched a children’s book called We walk together, an early childhood resource to educate children about Wurundjeri culture and history, and organised the Little Long Walk with support from the Long Walk Foundation and Airport West Football Club.”

Portfolio holder for Access, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Cr Cam Nation said these were just some of many projects that we have worked on with Wurundjeri.

“Our strong working relationship with Wurundjeri has allowed us to complete a number of projects acknowledging the cultural significance of the land and waterways to Wurundjeri,” Cr Nation said.

“Council engaged the Wurundjeri Narrap team as a specialist contractor to not only create but also manage and maintain the site of our Babel Paen-mirring ceremonial rock circle, including planting, landscaping and burnings at Five Mile Creek Reserve in Essendon.”

The Statement of Commitment will be displayed at the Moonee Valley Civic Centre. You can also read it on our Reconciliation page or in our MV2040 Strategy.
