Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek said:

“Council welcomes the announcement by the State Government of $1.5 million to go towards upgrading netball facilities at Riverside Golf and Tennis Centre at Fairbairn Park, Ascot Vale.

“This funding would contribute towards $3 million that Council is seeking in order to support a $6 million proposed upgrade. While we are currently investigating design options for how this would look, the plan is to include 16 new courts, including multi-line courts, infrastructure to support competition, spectator features and a new community sports pavilion with appropriate change rooms for female players.

“According to Netball Victoria, 37 per cent of netball participants who currently use the State Netball Hockey Centre live in Moonee Valley, which means a significant number of people are having to travel away from home in order to participate in sport. This has economic as well as social impacts for the community.

“We are also keen to build a new indoor facility for netball and other sports in Moonee Valley in the future, however this is still in the planning stages. We are seeking additional funding from other levels of government for these projects to support the continued growth of women’s sport in Moonee Valley.”

Leisure and Active Communities Portfolio holder, Deputy Mayor Cr Samantha Byrne said:

“There has been a significant increase in the number of women participating in sports in recent years and Council wants to do everything we can to support this growing trend. Netball in particular is one of the most popular sports in Moonee Valley, predominantly for women, and we are committed to supporting our clubs and players.

“There is insufficient sports infrastructure in Melbourne’s western suburbs, particularly to support women’s participation. Investing in netball and basketball infrastructure in Moonee Valley is a priority to deliver on the shared commitment between Council, the State and Federal Governments to support active communities and increase women’s participation in sport.”
