Moonee Valley Libraries turns onto its 50th page

Tuesday, 27 February 2018

Moonee Valley City Council is celebrating 50 years of its library services with an exciting program of events and activities taking place throughout the year.

Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek said Council was excited to celebrate this milestone.

“In 1968, branches in Flemington, Moonee Ponds and Niddrie opened their doors to the public for the very first time, marking 50 years of operation,” Cr Sipek said.

“This is a wonderful chance for the community to celebrate our libraries’ rich histories and the opportunities they continue to provide people of all ages, from all walks of life.”

Portfolio holder for Lifelong Learning Cr Narelle Sharpe said the community could look forward to an array of library celebrations following the launch at the Moonee Valley Festival on Sunday.

“There will be family-fun birthday events at the three branches celebrating their anniversaries, plus a series of pop-up libraries, history talks and memoir writing workshops for the community to get involved,” Cr Sharpe said.

“You can also celebrate the libraries by signing the giant birthday book which will be touring the libraries or share a memory of a great library experience from the past.

“Maybe it relates to the first book you borrowed, a friendship that was formed, or the first time you accessed the internet back in the 90s! Next time you’re in a branch, fill out a My Libraries Memory form – we will collate these and share them back to the community later in the year.”
