  • 25 metre indoor lap pool

  • spa, steam and sauna
  • indoor water playground for young children
  • café and seating area
  • new gym, group fitness and spin studios
  • crèche
  • accessible and family change rooms
  • community meeting space

What are the timeframes for the redevelopment?

Mid 2018 - we unveiled the centre design

From February 2019 - works will begin on site

Late 2020 - the centre will reopen

Further information will be released at each stage of the redevelopment to keep residents and leisure centre members updated on the details and impacts of the project. Until then, it is business as usual at the centre.

Why we are rebuilding the centre

East Keilor Leisure Centre plays a key role in supporting local residents to improve and maintain their health and wellbeing. Over the years the centre has been improved and upgraded, but the pools and the centre facilities are at the end of their serviceable life and will soon be beyond repair.

Funding the new centre

The new centre is estimated to cost $49.9 million and we are seeking $10 million from other levels of government to help fund this vibrant community hub. We will commit the $39.9 million needed to complete the project.

We were recently successful in securing $3 million from the State Government towards this project, which is an excellent start!

Planning for the future

In the coming months we will also be exploring improvements to the recreational facilities at Quinn Grove Reserve, and considering the need for additional facilities in this area. Consultation on these plans will take place later this year.

Redevelopment FAQs

What facilities will be included in the new centre?

  • 50 metre heated (seasonal) outdoor pool
  • 25 metre indoor lap pool
  • dedicated learn to swim pool
  • dedicated hydrotherapy pool
  • spa, steam and sauna
  • indoor water play features for young children
  • café and seating area
  • new gym, group fitness and spin studios
  • crèche
  • accessible and family change rooms
  • community meeting spaces

What are the timelines for the redevelopment and how long will works take?

  • Design works will be completed by the end of 2018
  • Construction is planned to commence from February2019, with the centre closing at that time
  • The new centre is scheduled to be open in late 2020

Construction is likely to take around 18 months, and we will keep members and the community updated on our progress.

Will the centre be closed down during the redevelopment; and if so when?

The centre will remain open for business as usual while the design and construction tendering phases of the project are undertaken. Once the building works are ready to commence the centre will need to be closed as the redevelopment includes a complete demolition. The closure of the facility is likely to occur from February 2019.

We are currently planning alternative arrangements so that leisure centre users can continue their health and fitness activities. We will update leisure centre users and the community on these options in the coming months.

What will happen to my membership and programs during the development; such as learn to swim and group fitness classes? What are my options?

During construction the existing facility will not be available for use. We are working on providing a range of options to ensure members can remain active during this time. Opportunities will soon be available for members to provide input into the planning of alternative options for the continuation of services and programs.

Is Council planning to introduce any other facilities in this area?

In the coming months we will also be exploring improvements to the recreational facilities at Quinn Grove Reserve, and considering the need for additional facilities in this area. Consultation on these plans will take place later this year.

How do I stay up to date on the project?
