Immunisation

Immunisation protects children and adults against harmful infections. Immunisation uses the body’s natural defence mechanism, the immune response, to build resistance to specific infections.

We provide a free childhood immunisation program administered by fully accredited and experienced nursing staff.

Our immunisation service runs in line with the National Immunisation Program Schedule and includes:

  • A childhood immunisation program operating monthly from six different venues in Moonee Valley with morning, afternoon and evening sessions available. No appointments are necessary as all council sessions are open sessions.
  • A school immunisation program - Three visits per year, attending all secondary schools within the municipality.

  • A child must be 6 weeks old to have the first scheduled immunisation.
  • A child must be 12 months to the day or over for 12 month scheduled vaccination.
  • At the end of your session, you and your child will need to wait 15 minutes before leaving in case of a severe reaction (they are rare but tend to happen within a few minutes if they occur). During this time if you are concerned about your child’s condition, return to the nurse immediately.
  • Sessions may be cancelled for Occupational Health and Safety reasons in adverse weather conditions (e.g. heatwaves). Call 9243 8888 for session confirmation.
  • From 1 January 2016, your child must be up to date with their immunisations to enrol at kindergarten or child care. For more information go to No Jab, No Play.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child be vaccinated if he/she is ill?

We recommend that you do not bring your child to be immunised if they are unwell. Immunisation will not be administered if your child has a temperature.

If your child is on medication or suffering from an illness please advise your local doctor, our immunisation team or Maternal and Child Health Nurse before the immunisation session.

Can more than one immunisation be given at the same time?

Yes. The vaccines recommended for babies and children can safely be administered at a single visit. The introduction of combination vaccines has enabled children to be immunised against more diseases with fewer injections.

Our Immunisation Program follows the National Immunisation Schedule which lists the age appropriate recommended vaccinations. Multiple injections do not weaken or overwhelm the immune system.

What is the Australian Immunisation Register?

The Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) is a national register that records details of vaccinations given to children who live in Australia.

All health professionals providing immunisation are required to forward information on all immunisations administered to the AIR.

Immunisation history statements are provided by the AIR and copies can be provided upon request by calling 1800 653 809.

This statement can be used as proof to meet immunisation requirements for school enrolment (See School entry immunisation status certificate information below) and for claiming child care benefits and family tax benefits. For further information regarding payments contact Centrelink on 136 150.

School entry immunisation status certificate

You must provide a school entry immunisation status certificate on enrolment to primary school in Victoria.

Your child’s immunisation history statement, supplied by the Australian Immunisation Register, is to be presented as a school entry immunisation certificate. This statement will be automatically posted out to you once your child has completed the four year-old immunisations and has completed all required childhood immunisations.

The statement should have the following printed on the bottom of the page: "This child has received all vaccines required by 5 years of age"

You can log in and access your child's Immunisation History Statement on the Medicare website or call Medicare on 1800 653 809.

Application for immunisation records (prior to and including 1998)

We can send your immunisation records to you if you have been immunised through our immunisation service.

We cannot provide records of immunisations given by doctors or other medical practitioners. Please complete our Immunisation Record Application Form and we will process your request.

You can call the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) on 1800 653 809 for immunisation records of children under seven years old.

Fees and procedures:

  • There is a $20 search fee to retrieve records prior to and including 1998.
  • Please allow 10 working days for us to find the records. Once they are found they will be posted to you.
  • The $20 search fee is non-refundable regardless of search results.
