Moonee Valley City Council has been successful in securing a $100,000 grant from the State Government for the Chris Lane Memorial Junior Baseball Field.

The field, at the home of the Essendon Baseball Club, will commemorate the life of club member Chris Lane who was tragically killed in the United States in 2013.

Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek said Council was ecstatic at receiving the grant, which we applied for through the State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

“Council is committed to ensuring the Chris Lane Memorial Field becomes a reality not only to honour the life of Chris Lane, but as part of our long-term vision to develop a first class multi-purpose sporting facility at Boeing Reserve,” Cr Sipek said.

“The Chris Lane Memorial Field will be a high-quality playing surface for the Essendon Baseball Club’s popular program and help cater for the high participation demands.”

Sports Minister John Eren announced the funding during a visit to Boeing Reserve yesterday. The grant will contribute to funding secured by Council of $130,000 from Baseball Australia and $12,500 from Essendon Baseball Club. To date, Council has invested more than $100,000 into the planning and design of the field.

Cr Sipek, who is also the portfolio holder for Sports and Community Organisations, said Council has been advocating to the State Government for some time to help bring the project to fruition.

“The current baseball ground is at capacity and the new field, to go next to our new baseball pavilion at Boeing Reserve, will create a baseball precinct to cater for the 19 junior and senior teams that play there and help increase participation in the sport,” Cr Sipek said.

“We know how important clubs like this are in strengthening community connections and this funding acknowledges the tireless work by the Essendon Baseball Club and the Lane family to honour the memory of Chris.”

The funding will go towards fencing, the construction of dug outs and seating.
