Keeping young and old safer on our roads

Monday, 19 February 2018

Moonee Valley City Council has a number of road safety initiatives coming up in March to help keep residents safer on our roads.

Council will provide its free Wiser Driver course for older residents and will hold its annual child restraint fitting day for parents and guardians of young children.

Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek said Council was committed to these initiatives as part of its Transport Safety Strategy.

“We have made a commitment to doing our very best to achieving zero deaths and serious injuries on Moonee Valley roads,” Cr Sipek said.

“Education is key. These two initiatives provide real, practical assistance to road users to help two of the more vulnerable age groups.

“Being able to drive helps older people remain mobile and able to connect with community with greater ease, but there are some common challenges for older drivers. The Wiser Driver course allows them to improve their driving skills and knowledge of the road rules to give them greater confidence behind the wheel.”

Residents interested in participating in the Wiser Driver course can call Council on 9243 8888 or email

Council’s Portfolio holder for Integrated Transport Cr Andrea Surace said Council was once again holding a child restraint fitting day on Saturday, 17 March in partnership with Victoria Police.

“The difference between a correctly fitted child restraint and a poorly fitted one can be fatal or life changing,” Cr Surace said.

“We need to make sure our children are correctly secured to vehicles, and that their restraints are routinely adjusted as the child grows.

“There’s no need to sign up for this check – simply show up in the morning.”

The child restraint fitting day will commence at 8.30am until 12 noon, in the car park on Mt Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds opposite the Moonee Ponds Bowling Club.
