Making Strathmore a 20-minute neighbourhood!

Monday, 21 May 2018

Moonee Valley City Council is piloting a 20-minute neighbourhood program in Strathmore, with a community workshop and street party among the activities planned to get locals engaged.

Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek said Moonee Valley was one of several councils to receive a grant from the State Government to implement 20-minute neighbourhood pilots across Victoria.

“When we talk 20-minute neigbourhoods, we’re talking about having your everyday needs met within a 20-minute walk, cycle or public transport ride from home – whether that be getting to shops, services, recreational facilities or schools,” Cr Sipek said.

“The only way we can achieve strong 20-minute neighbourhoods is by partnering with residents, community groups and services that have years of knowledge and experience to share.”

To get the conversations started, Council has put together an online directory of events, programs, nearby amenities and community groups based in and around Strathmore so residents can see what’s currently available to them. See our What's On page.

There are also two events lined up for June with the aim of bringing the neighbourhood together. These include a community workshop for locals to share their perspectives on living and walking in Strathmore, and a street party at the ‘pop-up’ park opposite Strathmore Station.

Future Communities portfolio holder Cr Rebecca Gauci Maurici said the 20-minute neighbourhood concept was a key part of Council’s long term vision MV2040.

“In developing MV2040, we’ve been using the 20-minute neighbourhood philosophy to ensure all future planning happens at a neighbourhood level,” Cr Gauci Maurici said.

“MV2040 breaks down Moonee Valley into 13 unique neighbourhoods, each with their own big ideas and aspirations. We’re then able to make sure everyone living in Moonee Valley has access to the things they need and remains connected.”
