The Community Grocer comes to Flemington

Monday, 12 February 2018

Moonee Valley City Council is proud to support The Community Grocer in establishing a weekly fresh fruit and vegetable market in Flemington.

The market, which commenced in January, will take place each Wednesday from 10am to 2pm at Flemington Community Centre, 25 Mt Alexander Road, Flemington.

Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek said the market was designed to make fresh food more accessible to some of Melbourne’s most vulnerable communities.

“We are very proud to have supported this initiative coming to Flemington,” Cr Sipek said.

“The Community Grocer does a fantastic job in providing fresh produce that is locally sourced, culturally appropriate and is 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than what you would find in the supermarkets.

“It’s designed to ensure vulnerable communities have access to affordable, fresh and healthy food options.”

Portfolio holder for Community Wellbeing Cr Jim Cusack said the initiative was inspiring.

“This project is a beautiful example of passionate, community-minded people doing great things to support others who are less fortunate,” Cr Cusack said.

“I’m excited about the positive impacts this market will have on the health, wellbeing and community spirit of those living on the Flemington Housing Estate and surrounding areas, especially in the light of the recent negative publicity aimed at this community.

“This is yet another example of great community ideas being bought to life with the help of Council’s grants program.”

The Community Grocer is a not-for-profit social enterprise that also holds pop-up markets in Cardinia, Carlton, Fawkner, Fitzroy, Mernda and Wyndham. For more information, visit The Community Grocer website.
