Settler's Cottage

New permanent home

Woodlands Park in Essendon has been selected as the new home for the Settler’s Cottage, a timber cottage stemming from the gold rush era and formerly located at 1070 Mt Alexander Road, Essendon.

This new location for the cottage was endorsed at our Council Meeting on Tuesday, 10 October, and is just 500 metres from its original location on Mt Alexander Road.
The decision to relocate the Settler’s Cottage to Woodlands Park was guided by the Conservation Management Plan for the cottage along with the Woodlands Park and Salmon Reserve Master Plan.

We are also considering options for the ongoing use of the cottage to provide opportunities for our community to access and use the cottage on a regular basis. The use and maintenance of the cottage will be guided by the Conservation Management Plan to ensure the historic significance of the cottage is protected.

Options to display historical information alongside the cottage are also being explored, so that the significance and background of this historical building is not lost.

Background information

Council took the decision in December to relocate and restore the cottage, which had been approved to be demolished as part of a new development.

The timber cottage was relocated to Council's depot in May 2016 while a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) was developed to guide the refurbishment and relocation.

A specialised contractor undertook preliminary works in accordance with the CMP to ensure the building was stable and safe to be relocated. This included carefully removing the roofing iron to ensure it cleared power lines during the relocation. The transportation of the cottage also required the removal of some weatherboards which revealed a second skin of weatherboards and an original window which had been hidden away for years.

We will continue to provide updates on the relocation and restoration of the Settler’s Cottage. Have a look at the photos of the works completed to date.
