Energy rating for homes

The Victorian Government’s 6 Star rating will help save our energy and water resources.

The design of your new home, renovation, extension or relocation will need to take account of the new energy efficiency standards.

6 Star is about good design. Some simple adjustments at the design stage can go a long way; consider the following:

  • Building orientation and internal zoning
  • Thermal mass and shading
  • Insulation levels
  • The sizing, location and thermal performance of windows
  • Weather stripping, sealing the building envelope
  • Solar hot water system
  • Rainwater tank for toilet flushing
  • Energy efficient lighting

For most houses, meeting the 6 Star Standard is not difficult. It is a flexible, performance based standard and allows homeowners, builders and designers enormous choice in meeting the requirements. Good design, especially at the planning stages of the project, is important. Your building designer or architect will be able to advise you on how best to achieve the rating. The design and assessment of the rating must be undertaken by an accredited Energy Rater.
